Our Compassionate Approach to Dental Care for Children with Special Needs

Compassionate dental care for special needs.

Every child deserves comfortable dental care.

Thereโ€™s nothing cuter than a childโ€™s smile, and we believe it should be protected. For some children, this can seem harder than it is for others. Some might have severe anxiety, while others have different health needs that can impact their daily life. Regardless of what their past is, every child deserves a positive, comfortable dental experience to keep their teeth as healthy as can be.

At We Make Kids Smile, we are committed to caring for children with special needs. To do this, we are patient, understanding, and each one of our staff members has specialized training to help navigate any problem that might arise.

If you have a child with special needs, dental care can be something that sparks anxiety in the family. Sometimes you donโ€™t know how itโ€™s going to goโ€”if your child will sit still enough or remain calm throughout their appointment. Thatโ€™s something you can trust We Make Kids Smile with. We are highly trained and ready to help your child through their upcoming appointment.

Creating a Calm, Supportive Environment

We have worked hard to make sure our office is a safe space for all of our patients. It is a quiet, sensory-friendly space to help reduce anxiety, with quiet rooms available to help your children feel calm if noise bothers them and TVs mounted on the ceiling to offer a little extra distraction, in the form of your childโ€™s favorite show. Does your child have trouble with bright lights? To help them out, we have sunglasses just for them, or we can dim the lights so they feel more comfortable.

The decor in our office isnโ€™t the only way we keep the place calm. Throughout the appointment, you can expect gentle communication and step-by-step explanations. Sometimes this involves changing the way we speak so our voices are at the appropriate level for each child. For many children, and their parents, this small change can help them feel a little safer by making sure they know what to expect every step of the way.

Specialized Training and Team Approach

The staff at We Make Kids Smile is highly trained to help children deal with any dental problems related to their special needs, but thatโ€™s not where the training ends. They also have experience working with children who have developmental, sensory, or behavioral differences. But we donโ€™t rely solely on the training to get things done. We firmly believe that we canโ€™t accomplish anything without the help of the parents. We collaborate with you, the parent, and their healthcare providers so we can truly understand each childโ€™s unique needs.

Tailored Treatment Plans

We Make Kids Smile uses a patient-centered approach so that each and every one of our patients gets the individualized care they deserve. We adjust the approach and treatment plans to fit their comfort level, communication style, and medical history. This goes a long way toward helping a child feel safer in our office, and thatโ€™s exactly how it should be.

Sometimes, children need a little extra time. It may take longer to explain things to them, or we want to make sure they have the time to grow comfortable around the staff and the dental equipment. Regardless of the reason, we keep our scheduling flexible so that we can spend that extra time with our little patients as needed without causing any extra stress.

Building Trust Through Positive Experiences

Each dental visit counts more than many people realize. One positive experience builds upon the next, and so on. During each visit, we focus on familiarity, praise, and patience to assure your child has the best experience possible. We donโ€™t want them to get nervous every time they come in; we want them to remember the smiles, the laughter, the way they truly felt safe with our dental team.

To help achieve this, we use gradual exposure techniques to help children build confidence over time instead of expecting instant results. Progressively, each experience will add up with the last, making it less likely for dental anxiety to set in.
